Dear Friends:
These are the dog days of summer, so named because of the appearance, this time of year, of Sirius, or Canis Majoris, the brightest star after the Sun. Many ancient cultures (including Greek and Egyptian) blamed this Dog Star, close to Orion, for a combination of scorching heat, floods, and general bad luck. We are certainly experiencing the first two here in the US, and, well, let's hope for NOT bad luck.
Some people slow down in summer…
Summer is historically a slower time in the publishing world. Writers are often told not to bother sending out queries in the summer because the whole industry supposedly takes the summer off, agents and editors are catching up on their manuscript piles (there were always stories of editors reading poolside in the Hamptons—New York still being considered the epicenter of US publishing), and nothing will happen until the Fall, when everything restarts. What the French refer to as "la rentrée." Re-entry.
…but not us!
As you know by now, Galiot Press does things a bit differently. Plus, we are a start-up, after all. So this summer, we are hard at work building many aspects of the press. (And missing our intern who is away for a while.) We are finalizing our author contract, thinking about finances and possible equity arrangements, zeroing in on our distribution system, expanding our network, planning our classes and Cape Cod five-day workshop, and of course reading queries and manuscripts. (Our query submission booking system is working very well!) And Henriette is currently in Greece where she is leading the Krouna Writing Workshop for a few lucky writers! (Next summer, this will be a Galiot workshop, so if you've been wanting an excuse to go to Greece--like anyone needs an excuse--then here's your chance! We will still be holding annual workshops in Massachusetts as well.)
Looking for a third person to join Galiot Press
We are also on the lookout for someone who could join our team as a Business Development and Partnership Manager. If you know of such a person, please put them in touch with us! This person would need to share our vision and mission, be open to thinking creatively and unconventionally, and have a track record with helping to launch and grow a start-up. They do not need to have publishing-specific experience, but some experience and contacts in the realms of retail, the arts, and/or the hospitality industry would be a big plus. This would be a part-time position, with a compensation structure to be negotiated--likely a combination of equity and performance-based compensation. Please spread the word!
An additional instructor for our Cape Cod workshop
We are delighted to have engaged Theresa Okokon--writer, instructor, storyteller, and co-host of Stories from the Stage--to be our third instructor at our Wellfleet, MA workshop November 8-13, 2024. She is a Wisconsinite of Nigerian origin, and her memoir in essays, WHO I ALWAYS WAS, comes out next year. You can find many of her writings here. If you are working on a novel or a memoir, or if you know anyone who is, please consider joining us! Full details of the workshop, which takes place on the beautiful Outer Cape in Massachusetts, can be found here.
A new book by a Galiot friend
One of our dear Galiot friends and Kickstarter backer Marjan Kamali launched her third book, THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN, to a packed audience (including many Galiot supporters) at Belmont Books last week. Marjan's books engage both the heart and the mind: this is an emotional story steeped in the history and politics of Iran. And it just became a national best-seller! Add it to your summer reading list!
With warm (melting!) wishes,
Anjali & Henriette
Would love to get in touch. Are you based in Arlington (I'm in Newton).
